The Average American is in Self Imposed Slavery

Anybody remember the song “1999” by Prince?  It’s a song about the world coming to an end.  Everyone is panicking, but he just decides he’s going to party in the midst of the chaos, singing “Life is just a party and parties weren’t meant to last.”

I thought about this song when I read yesterday about how the amount of credit card debt in America is absolutely insane right now.  Our credit card debt has increased by 368% over the same period two years ago, which means we are using those stupid little plastic demons even more than before the recession started.

What are people thinking?

Think about it, there has been no improvement in the average American’s financial situation over the past couple of years, in fact, most of us are worse off financially.  But we’re still using the credit cards like it’s 1999 (or 2009 in this case) and we just don’t care.

We’re Comfortable In Our Bondage

So what’s the deal here?  Have people just given up and decided if they are gonna go down their gonna do it big?  Or maybe, and I think this is more likely, it’s that we Americans haven’t learned our lesson.

Our incomes are down, many of us are working part time or not at all, and the credit cards are there to fill in the gaps because we haven’t done enough to develop better spending habits and change the debt bondage lifestyle we have become way too comfortable with.

America has become comfortable being in slavery to debt.

Choose Freedom Over Slavery

That’s right, we’ve gotten so used to believing that being in debt is a necessary part of life that we have become comfortable with it and the limitations that it brings to our lives.  We’ve let all the marketing convince us not to think anymore about what we do with our money.  As long as they can keep the hook in our mouth we will be powerless to have the freedom that God wants for each and every one of us.  He wants us to be financially blessed so we can bless others.

Our constitution guarantees our freedom, but it doesn’t guarantee us against our self imposed slaveryl.  It doesn’t guarantee that we won’t suffer from our own stupidity.

So now we have to come to the realization that it is up to us.

WE have to be the ones to start changing things in this country.

WE have to start reversing the bondage we’ve let develop in our own lives.

WE have to get out of what’s been “normal” for so long and learn to be different.

WE have to change the world if we want the world to change.

It is my goal to change lives by teaching people how to get out of that bondage.  But I can’t do it without people like you spreading the word.  The more people you tell, the more lives will be changed.

Forward this post to others so they will also spread the word.
