We originally were looking into LED bulbs, but quickly realized a few things- while they are "cool"- emitting little to no heat from them (which was an original concern of ours), they are 1) extremely expensive and 2) they emit a "blue-ish" glow/hue to the lighting that they project. Neither of these things seemed appealing to us, which steered us into the direction of the CFLs. They are a truly economical option that emits a warm glow that is not harsh or glaring in any way. These bulbs are 60 watt bulbs and they work very well to light our office space. (We have 3 lamps in the space that have all been outfitted with these 60 watt CFL bulbs). The light is not blue-hued or glaring. It is super easy to work by and casts a truly warm glow (without heat coming off the bulbs.) We have had no problems with the bulbs and look forward to getting lots of mileage out of this pack of eight bulbs!
Overall, we are really pleased with this pack of bulbs. They are the most pocket-friendly, earth-friendly option that we were able to find. We look forward to using them for a long time!
In an effort to reduce our energy costs I thoroughly explored various low-cost options to fit within our tight budget to help reduce our costs. Ultimately I decided to first target our lighting sources and decided to give CFL bulbs a try. I bought a single pack and installed the bulbs in our most frequently used locations. Each month I then used the savings from our utilities and applied those savings to purchasing the next round of CFL bulbs. Within short order all our bulbs had been changed out, our home stayed cooler during the hot summer days which meant our AC unit was not running quite as often. Win-Win.
Out of the numerous brands of CFL bulbs we tried, the GE 13 watt were by far the best quality. The GE bulbs are smaller and shorter than many other brands making them ideal for ceiling fans and fixtures there the covers will not allow the taller brands to be used. One pack of off-brand bulbs continuously burned out. The GE bulbs have remained reliable whether used upright, upside down or in ceiling fans - something other brands of CFL bulbs cannot claim. The packaging states these bulbs have a light output of 825 lumens at 13 watts equivalent to 60 watts with a life of 8000 hours - up to 8 times longer than many ordinary incandescent bulbs. The packaging also includes a chart showing the electricity cost savings using this CFL bulb as compared to using a standard incandescent bulb is $38 per bulb when the kilowatt hour rate is 10 cents and the savings is $23 per bulb at 6 cents per kilowatt hour. I like how the easy-open packaging holds each bulb snug and secure until ready to be used. These bulbs GE's customer service is 800-435-4448 8:00a-6:00p EST.
I highly recommend and will indeed purchase again until the technology of the LED bulbs improve significantly.
- Good - It sure saved me a lot on electricity costs - around $10 the past month by just replacing all the 60-watt incandescent bulbs that came with my apartment.
- Good - This bulb is cheap and durable.
- Bad - This bulb itself takes a long time to warm up. This means it does not have the advertised 60-watt brightness when it's turned on. It takes more than 20 minutes for it to come anywhere close. When I used it in a windowless bathroom, I slipped on a rug because I couldn't see it in such dim and slippery area. It still hasn't gotten really bright even when I'm done with showering. This problem also made it not a good idea on desk (work) lamps. By the time it's good for reading/writing, I could have already finished the job.
- And one SAFETY Precaution: If using this in bathroom, never, NEVER put it in an enclosed lighting fixture. (i.e. don't cover it.) Moisture builds up when you take a shower and it scared me off when I heard it sparkling in the lights. Worked fine without the cover, but I figured this won't provide adequate lighting in bathrooms anyways so switched it out.
Generally I would use this light bulb ONLY for places where the brightness is not a big concern or when lights are kept on for hours in a row, like in my living room, dining area, or bedroom lamp.
